Hansen captures ‘Hot Dog Eating Contest’ title again

For the third year in a row, Joel Hansen, a resident of Canada, captured the overall title of being the ‘Hot Dog Eating Contest’ champion during the July 4 activities in downtown Canton. The fourth annual ‘Hot Dog Eating Contest,’ sponsored by Sonic, was among the activities that took place during the Fourth of July Celebration, sponsored by the Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce.

Gas prices fall after slight uptick

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 8.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.12/g July 3, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 7.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 125.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 3.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.80 per gallon.

Van Zandt County fire departments have had their hands full during recent summers, crisscrossing the area to contain out of control grass fires sparked by dragging chains from vehicles, discarded cigarette butts, equipment malfunctions and out of control burns.
