The University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A). The award honors the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas based on their team performance in district and state championships.

Extension Service Office among Land Summit sponsors

The TexasA&M Extension Service Offices of Van Zandt County, Smith County, Rains County and Kaufman County have announced that they will be cohosting the annual Northeast Texas Rural Land Summit June 30 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau Center located at 220 Burnett Trail in Canton.

CHS Academic UIL Team makes school history

The Canton High School Academic UIL (University Interscholastic League) Team brought home more Academic State Champions than at any time in the history of the school in 2023 with three championships and a total of six gold medals. The state competition took place in Austin May 1718.

Strike a chord

Music has always been a major part of Mila Rae’s life growing up and now through her singing, songwriting and musical instrument skills, she is looking forward to the challenges of advancing her career, not only in Van Zandt County, but throughout the State of Texas and beyond. Rae, 22, the daughter of Rodney and Kim Harrison of Canton, was born in Eastland, Texas, and moved to Canton following her first-grade year in elementary school.

Sales tax revenues decrease for second month

DAVID KAPITAN sports@vanzandtnews.com The Texas State Comptroller’s Office delivered its latest monthly sales tax revenue report to local cities June 7, indicating that all but one had seen gains when comparing collection totals against the same month from the previous year. The City of Canton would prove to be the outlier as collections dipped from $446,665.64 in June 2022 down to $425,795.76 in June 2023.

ETCOG recognized for excellence in financial reporting

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to ETCOG for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2021.
