The Van Zandt County Republican Club will be sponsoring a candidate forum for all school board candidates in Van Zandt County beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Joe Carter and VZC Jail Administrator Matt Stucker presented an update on VZC Jail standards and personnel during the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court April 12. “I took over as VZC sheriff on May 15, 2022,” recalled Carter to the commissioners’court.

Why do you feel that you are the best candidate for this position? Josh Wilkerson and his wife, Casey, are lifelong Canton residents and attended Canton Schools kindergarten-12th. Josh graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2000, moved back to Canton, and pursued a career in Engineering, Design, Procurement, and Construction of Petrochemical facilities.

Why do you feel that you are the best candidate for this position? Hello, I am Terrica Stowell and am running for Canton School board, Place 7. I am a Navy Veteran, college graduate, real estate agent and small business owner.

Why do you feel that you are the best candidate for this position? My husband, Chris, and I chose Canton over 10 years ago for our family to establish roots because, as most would agree, it is a great place to raise a family primarily due to an excellent school district. We have a daughter in the fifth grade and a son in the third grade.

Why do you feel that you are the best candidate for this position? My name is Julie Franklin, and I am running for Canton ISD School Board of Trustees, Position 6. I am married to Alan Franklin, and we have five children.

Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney Tonda Curry, with a number of VZC law enforcement officials standing with her, announced the formation of a task force April 5 to fight the battle in VZC against fentanyl, recognized as a powerful opioid drug used in the treatment of severe pain.

With the economic dominance of First Monday Trade Days, Canton has played a prime host to a number of unique businesses over the years. While some flourish and some inevitably fizzle out, it cannot be refuted that the nucleus of Canton relies on its small business owners.
