In Van Zandt County, the need for compassionate volunteers to support abused and neglected children is growing. Currently, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Kids of East Texas is facing a critical challenge.

Council approves resolution opposing permit application

During an afternoon special called meeting of the Canton City Council July 3, council members approved in a 3-0 vote a resolution opposing a groundwater permit application dealing with the development of high-capacity wells drawing from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.
Canton Mayor Lou Ann Berry presented a question for Canton Assistant City Manager Steve Ruppenthal regarding a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign a letter to the Neches and Trinity Valleys Groundwater Conservation District. The resolution opposes Redtown Ranch Holdings LLC’s request for a permit to drill high water wells in the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer. Williams expresses concerns over ambulance service

One remains in critical condition after I-20 wreck

news@kaufmanherald.com One person is still in critical condition after a wreck that killed five people just outside Terrell June 28 on Interstate 20. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Alexis Gonzalez- Companioni fell asleep at the wheel, causing his semitruck to plow into stopped traffic on the highway, causing a chain reaction.

Hunting ‘new’ land

This is the time of year when many hunters are moving from one hunting lease to a new one. There are many reasons for changing hunting leases and most veteran hunters understand that unless they own the land they hunt on, there is a good chance they will one day have to leave their hunting grounds and look for another.

Budget adjustment approved by commissioners

A budget adjustment totaling $200,000 to be moved from Contingency to Capital Outlay was approved in a 4-1 vote by the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court July 1 during its regular meeting. On June 23, the commissioners’ court voted, also 4-1, to accept new renegotiated terms regarding the purchase of the Paul Michael building located at 1930 North Trades Day Blvd.
