As I reflect on my experience writing the articles and editorials for the Van Zandt County Readers’ Choice, I am struck by the profound sense of community I encountered. Through one-on-one conversations with local business owners and community members, I discovered a deep sense of connection that binds our county together, one that transcends the boundaries of small towns.

Pizza Hut employee receives surprise proclamation

Pizza Hut of Canton employee Dorothy Baker received a surprise on her 30-year anniversary at the business when she was presented with a proclamation by Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett who declared Monday, Feb. 3 as ‘Dorothy Baker Day’ in Canton. Everett read from the proclamation: “Whereas, our community desires to recognize and honor the service and dedication of its outstanding citizens; and ‘Whereas, Dorothy Baker has served as an employee of the Pizza Hut located in Canton for 30 years; and ‘Whereas, her dedication to her job has earned her the official title of ‘Pizza Hut Lady of Canton,’ and ‘Whereas, she has served to satisfy the public’s continuous yearnings and appetites for pizza; and ‘Whereas, her devotion to her job has kept many of us from getting hungry; ‘Now, Therefore, I, Lou Ann Everett, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor and on behalf of the Canton City Council and all citizens hereof, do hereby proclaim February 3, 2025, DOROTHY BAKER DAY in Canton, Texas, urging all citizens to join me in commending Ms. Baker and in conveying our deep appreciation for her dedicated service and extending best wishes for continued success in life’s pursuits.

AARP Driver Safety Course to be offered Feb. 20

The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) Driver Safety Program and the Van Zandt County/Sarah Norman Library located at 317 First Monday Lane in Canton are sponsoring a driver safety class on Thursday, Feb. 20 from noon to 5 p.m.

susan@vanzandtnews.com The Canton City Council convened on Jan. 21 with a cold breeze outside, reflecting the winter chill but not dampening the spirits of the council members and attendees. Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett called the meeting to order and leading the assembly in an invocation and pledge of allegiance. Canton City Council member Randon Sumner was not in attendance at the Jan. 21 meeting.
