Council talks transportation, awards scholarships

Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett presented three scholarships to Canton ISD students during the May 17 Canton City Council meeting. The Sanitation Solutions scholarships were presented to seniors Catherine Hook and Raeleigh Strickland (not present); a City of Canton First Monday scholarship was presented to Emory Rhoten; the Rayford Hutcherson scholarship was presented to graduate Avery Nicks.

Canton High School led commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2022 on Friday, May 20, at Norris Birdwell Stadium. The stands were packed with loved ones and family members as the procession of graduates began with valedictorian Avery Nicks and salutatorian Katie Wilkerson leading the way.

Charges dropped against former VZC sheriff

On Friday, May 20, charges against former Van Zandt County Sheriff Steve Hendrix and two of his deputies for giving a false statement to a peace officer were dismissed. The dismissal comes at the heels of the indictment issued in March accusing Sheriff Hendrix, Chief Deputy Jerry Wood and Sgt.

Vets Memorial to hold program May 30

Memorial Day will again take on a special meaning in Van Zandt County as the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial Board has announced that they will be hosting their annual program beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the VZC Veterans Memorial in Canton.

Van Zandt wildfire victims encouraged to apply for aid

Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) and its member-families are working to help rebuild areas of Texas following recent wildfires that scorched the land, destroyed buildings and displaced livestock. Those affected by the recent fires are encouraged to apply now for assistance through the TFB West Texas Wildfire Relief Fund.

American Rescue Plan Funding requests approved

Requests for proposals regarding American Rescue Plan Funding projects received unanimous approval from the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court during its regular meeting May 11. Trott Communications Group Manager of RF Engineering Barry Black of Irving discussed two projects VZC is involved in regarding the use of American Rescue Plan Funding.

There were 42 people in attendance during the National Day or Prayer in Van Zandt County held Thursday, May 5. Pastors from multiple churches around the county helped lead the event.
