The Canton athletic program was well represented in Austin May 12 with three different athletes, Hannah Cade, Preston Yarber and Jaxson Hubble, qualifying to compete at this year’s Class 4A State Track and Field Meet May 12-13.

The Canton Eagles found themselves in a rare position last week, opening the playoffs against a higher seeded opponent after finishing fourth overall in District 14- 4A play. Canton would take care of business despite those challenges, fending off the Nevada Community Braves in three games to advance to the Area round.

The Canton Eaglette softball program had history in its sights last week, needing a series win over the Gilmer Lady Buckeyes to clinch a first-ever Regional Quarterfinal berth. Despite a stiff challenge Canton would complete its mission, scoring a pair of thrilling victories to keep their postseason journey alive.

The Canton Eagles kept busy with the start of this year’s Class 4A UIL Playoffs looming just over the horizon, wrapping up District 14-4A play against Brownsboro before playing a pair of tune-up games against Tatum and Brook Hill.

The Canton Eaglettes made it look easy last week, opening their playoff run with a dominant sweep of the Sunnyvale Lady Raiders in bi-district round action. Canton set the tone early for what type of series it would be, dominating from start to finish in a 13-0 rout of Sunnyvale on the road April 27.

County athletes representing Canton, Van and Wills Point made their way to the Texas A&M campus in Commerce April 29-30 to compete against one another and some of the top programs from across East Texas at the Class 4A Region II Meet.

The Canton Eagles stayed busy last week, hitting the field three times over a five-day span. Canton would go 1-2 overall in those matchups, downing Mabank before coming up short against Van and Edgewood.

The ETA1 16 Black volleyball team recently won the 16 American Division at the 2022 Lone Star Volleyball Classic and earned a berth in the upcoming USAV National Tournament in Indianapolis this July. The team includes two athletes with Van Zandt County ties, including Canton standout Georgia Crayton (first row, far right) and Edgewood’s Kassidy Paul (top row, fourth from left).
