Prox signs with Sam Houston State

Chantson Prox made his commitment official on Monday, Jan. 23, signing on to join Sam Houston State University’s football program, as a member of the 2023 recruiting class. Prox, a standout on both sides of the ball during his high school career, is scheduled to enroll over the summer in preparation of the 2023 season.

Eagles roll in rivalry matchups as district clashes loom large

The Canton Eagles, who gave themselves little room for error following a district- opening loss to Athens in December, picked up two necessary wins this past week to improve to 3-1 on the slate. The schedule would feature two of the Eagles’ biggest rivals in District 16-4A, as Tuesday offered a road trip to Brownsboro and Friday a home bout with the Van Vandals.

TSWA All-State Volleyball

Left, Canton junior Georgia Crayton was one of six Van Zandt County athletes to be recognized for her play during the 2022 volleyball season by the Texas Sports Writers Association, earning Honorable Mention All-State honors as a setter. Competing coaches had previously recognized Crayton as the Setter of the Year in District 16-4A. Middle, Airianna Pickens, who had previously earned District 16-4A Offensive Player of the Year honors in a vote of competing coaches, capped her high school playing career by being named an Honorable Mention All-State performer by the TSWA. Pickens is committed to playing volleyball at Ranger College in Fall 2023. Right, Eaglette standout student-athlete Maddie Wilson continued to earn accolades for her performance during the 2022 volleyball season, earning both District 16-4A Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the Class 4A Texas Sports Writers Association Honorable Mention All-State Team. Wilson is slated to play collegiately at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Eaglettes drop heartbreaker to Lady Vandals

The Canton Eaglettes finished this past week 1-1, following an impressive win over defending state-champion Brownsboro on Tuesday, and a gut-wrenching overtime loss to Van on Friday. To no surprise, the Eaglettes would find themselves in a tight contest on Tuesday in Brownsboro, against a Bearettes team that entered the game at 16-5 on the season.

Shaw, Prox highlight All-District honors

All-District superlatives and selections for District 8-4A, Division 2 football were announced last week, which saw several Canton athletes selected amongst their peers. Kameron Shaw headlined Canton’s selections, as he was recognized as a first team running back amongst the district.
