A good crowd was on hand for an outdoor ceremony on the north side steps of the Van Zandt County Courthouse April 12 for a dedication ceremony and unveiling of a bronze plaque commemorating the historic ‘Victory or Death’ letter authorized by William Barret Travis at The Alamo in 1836. The event was hosted by VZC and The Alamo Letter Society.
Doc Collins, the Van Zandt County Chairman for The Alamo Letter Society, unveiled a 200-pound bronze plaque in recognition of the 220-word ‘Victory or Death’ Letter that was dedicated April 12 on the northside steps of the VZC Courthouse. VZC was the fourth county in the state to receive the plaque from The Alamo Letter Society, who is attempting to place the plaque in all 254 courthouses throughout the state. Photo by Faith Caughron

Annual Chamber Gala set for Friday

With the annual Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce Gala on the horizon, chamber Chief Executive Officer Kelli Ridgway released the following statement: “All of us here at the chamber are so excited about our upcoming annual Awards Gala and celebrating all of our 2024 award winners,” emphasized Ridgway. “This event is not only a time to acknowledge the hard work of so many in our community, the Gala is also the largest fundraiser of the year for the chamber of commerce. The Gala would not be possible without the generous contributions of all of our members and sponsors.

As we enter the severe weather season, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds Texans they can purchase certain items tax free during the state’s sales tax holiday for emergency preparation supplies, which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, and ends at midnight on Monday, April 29.

VZC Genealogical Society holds monthly meeting
