In 1967, the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, now known as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), created the Beautify Texas Council to help give Texas a facelift for the upcoming 1968 HemisFair in San Antonio.

A Van Zandt County dog owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty following a civil custody hearing Monday, April 1, according to information released by the SPCA of Texas. The hearing was held in the VZC Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 courtroom.
Tickets are still available for the annual Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce Gala scheduled for Friday, April 19 at the Canton Civic Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the banquet will begin at 6 p.m.
Each year, the Canton Tractor Show and Swap Meet happens during the first weekend of April out at the First Monday Trade Day Grounds in Canton. Many of the tractors were vintage, either beautifully restored or kept in their original form.
The Canton Lions Club District 2-X2 met Wednesday, April 3, with Lion President Jesse Carranza presiding. Lion Bob Reese introduced guest speakers, Conrad and Tiffani Reese, who talked about their experiences with Texas Lions Camp (TLC) and how it provided a unique experience for their family of five.
The Van Zandt Junior Livestock Auction took place Friday, March 29 during the 66th annual VZC Fair. Steer, sheep, goat, hog, broiler and ag mechanic exhibitors competed for one of the 115 spots in the auction.
The public is invited to attend the unveiling of a bronze plaque commemorating the historic ‘Victory or Death’ letter authorized by William Barret Travis at The Alamo in 1836. The event will take place at 10 a.m.
