Four VZC athletes named as scholarship winners

The Texas Area Basketball Association of Basketball Officials (TABO) recently named 13 boys and girls varsity basketball players as area recipients of scholarship awards. Among those area athletes named as scholarship award winners were Payton Bray of Canton, Shelby Burns of Van, Kate Lindsey of Martins Mill, and Blair McPherson of Edgewood.

The student listed on the President’s Honor Roll at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville is an undergraduate who has achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average in all work attempted while enrolled in not less than 12 semester hours. The university would like to recognize the following student for earning the honor for the Fall 2023 semester: Haley McCauley of Canton.

Carter recognized by Texas Association of Counties

Four CHS students named to Symphonic All-State Band

Canton High School was well represented on the Symphonic All-State Band in San Antonio as four band students recently auditioned and were named to the band. The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) sponsors the Texas All-State audition process to promote student’s dedication to their musical knowledge and Dean Kuhl, sophomore, bari sax, first year All-State, ranked #1.

Agreement with Kaufman County to house inmates approved

Following a presentation and recommendation by Van Zandt County Sheriff Joe Carter and VZC Sheriff’s Department Captain Melonie Williams, the VZC Commissioners Court approved an Interlocal Cooperation Agreement with Kaufman County to house inmates, when needed, at their facility.

Dutton sworn in as state representative

History was made at the Van Zandt County District Courtroom inside the VZC Courthouse in Canton Feb. 14 as Republican Jill Dutton of Van was sworn in as the first woman to represent Van Zandt County in the Texas House of Representatives.
