Van Zandt County Judge Andy Reese announced during the April 12 regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court that the annual National Day of Prayer Ceremony would be held Thursday, May 4, at the VZC Courthouse.

Edom VFD seeking ‘Good Samaritans’

The Edom Volunteer Fire Department is looking for two ‘Good Samaritans’ who heroically recently pulled a victim from a burning car saving the individual’s life, according to Dylan Turner with the Edom VFD.

Vandalism reported at Cherry Creek Park

A report of vandalism at Cherry Creek Park in Canton is still under investigation, according to Canton Police Department Detective Jerod Forrest. Forrest said that the vandalism was done sometime during the overnight hours Dec.

Debate between Money, Dutton set for Jan. 9

Van Zandt County Republican Party Chairman Lance Lenz recently released information about a scheduled VZC debate between the two Republican Party candidates that are on the Tuesday, Jan. 30 ballot for the Texas House District 2 special runoff election.

Bell’s Christmas light display still drawing crowds

Howard Bell of Canton and his family have been doing Christmas lights for years and the holiday displays just keep on growing. Personally, for Howard Bell, he loves Christmas but he did not celebrate it much as a child, but when his dad took the family out somewhere around the holiday season in the 1970s, if somebody had a string of lights, it was a mesmerizing experience because very few people did any glowing light displays back then.

Update on Teacher Incentive Allotment program presented

Canton ISD Director of Curriculum and Assessment Dr. Angela Barton presented a power point update on the Teacher Incentive Allotment program Dec. 11 during the regular monthly meeting of the Canton School Board. Trustee Dr. Leslea Evans was not in attendance. According to Barton, the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) was created by the Texas Legislature as part of House Bill 3 to provide a realistic pathway for top teachers to earn higher salaries and to help attract and retain highly effective teachers.
