LIONS AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS

The Canton Lions Club met Wednesday, May 18, at the Van Zandt Country Club with Lion President Lace Deibert presiding. This week’s program introduced the 2022 Scholarship recipients. The scholarship program is funded by fundraising projects held during the year, such as the Golf Tournament, raffles, and First Monday parking. Committee members voting on the recipients are assisted by school counselors. Committee members this year headed by committee chair Anna McDaniel are Kara Ragle, Teri Pruitt, and Lace Deibert. Recipients are: from Canton High School, Alicia Bryant, Carrie Buck, Emma Crossley, Samantha Crossley, Cody Daughtery, Sloan Irwin, and Ashton Norrell; Home School Student, Johnathon Goode; Edgewood High School, Michael Lenamond and from Martins Mill High School, Kylee Lookabaugh and Lynneya Barentine. Johnson retires from Appraisal District

Recently a host of friends, family, and colleagues had the privilege of recognizing and celebrating the tremendous career of Judy Johnson. Judy made the decision to retire from the Appraisal District after 41 years with the organization. Her tenure with the District began at its inception, where she helped build the organization from the ground up to where it is today. Van Zandt County’s Therapy Dog Teams, and members of Alliance of Therapy Dogs, mourn the passing of another one of their beloved therapy dogs, Ladybug, a 12-year old Giant Schnauzer, who lost her battle with cancer on May 25.

Genealogical Society meeting will show how to fi nd DNA cousins

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society will have its regular free public meeting at the main county library in Canton from 2-4 p.m. May 28. The speaker (via live webinar) will be Sarah Cochran, also known as “The Skeleton Whisperer,” a professional genealogist based in southern California.

Holt to lead American Red Cross East Texas

The American Red Cross introduces Karen Holt as the executive director of the East Texas Chapter of the Red Cross North Texas Region. Holt will be based in Tyler and Longview, where she will oversee Red Cross programs and services for over 810,000 people throughout Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Panola, Rusk, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood counties.

Youth Services Librarian Jordin Shilling has released information regarding a new event held at the Van Zandt County Sarah Norman Library. According to Shilling, the library will be holding a ‘Build-A-Rama” every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. During the event, attendees have the opportunity to build anything they can think of with a huge number of Legos.
